Kitkat asked:

Should I throw them away or clean them, and if I do throw them away, what is a proper way to discard knives?

It depends if they were expensive knives. If they were, I would take them and have them professionally sharpened and cleaned. Otherwise, pitch them in the trash and replace with good quality knives.

they should easily clean up with steel wool. After you get them cleaned and sharpened, wipe them with a paper towel with cooking oil on it and they will not rust between uses.
